19 DVDs For the Comic Book Fan

Comic Books are filled with action-packed adventures and have continued to hold on to a huge fan base over the years (just look at the unbelievable success of Comic-Con and all the comic book inspired movies Hollywood keeps churning out). From brilliant animation to thrilling live-action, these films are sure to have you expecting the unexpected. These DVDs would also make a great gift for your comic book loving friend or family member.

Some of the movies shown may not be suitable for children. Below are an three additional DVDs that kids would love.

1. Wonder Woman


The first full-length animated movie featuring the Princess of the Amazons taking on Ares, the God of War. Starring the voices of Keri Russell as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor, Alfred Molina as Ares and Rosario Dawson as Artemis.


2. The Dark Knight


This amazing sequel to Batman Begins, has Batman facing off against the Joker. Starring Christian Bale as Batman, Heath Ledger as the Joker, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Gary Oldman as Lt./Commissioner Gordon and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two Face. Truly a Must See for any Batman fan.


3. X-Men 3: The Last Stand


This movie not only has the mutants fighting against the "cure" but also against each other in the last movie in the X-Men trilogy. Starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Halle Berry as Storm, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast, Ian McKellen as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier.


4. Spider-Man 2


The best out the three Spider-Man movies has Peter Parker/Spider-Man battling Doctor Octupus. Starring Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and Alfred Molina as Doctor Otto Octavius.


5. Watchmen


For the ultimate comic book fan, this movie closely follows the epic book and will have you glued to your seat. Starring Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, Malin Akerman as Laurie Jupiter/Silk Spectre II, Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan, Patrick Wilson as Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl, Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake/The Comedian.


6. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies Available September 29th


This full-length animated film is based on the Superman/Batman comic book issues #1-6 written by Jeph Loeb, will have Superman and Batman trying not only to stop an asteroid heading to earth but having to deal with being framed by President of the United States Lex Luthor claiming the impending asteroid is connected to an evil plot by the Man of Steel.

Reprising their roles from the Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series has Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tim Daly as Superman and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. Also will feature the voices of CCH Pounder as Amanda Waller (reprising her roll from Justice League: The Animated Series), LeVar Burton as Black Lighting and Allison Mack as Power Girl.


7. The Incredible Hulk


Starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/the Hulk trying to find a cure for his alter ego the Hulk and fight against the military to avoid being captured.


8. Superman II


The ultimate movie for any Superman fan features Christopher Reeve as Superman taking on three Kryptonian criminals who have escaped from the Phantom Zone trying take over the world. Also, starring Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor.


9. Green Lantern: First Flight


The first full-length animated movie features Hale Jordan as Green Lantern trying to stop Sinestro from destroying the Green Lantern Corps. Starring the voices of Christopher Meloni (Law & Order:SVU) as Hale Jordan/Green Lantern, Victor Garber as Sinestro, Tricia Helfer as Boodikka and Michael Madsen as Kilowog.


10. Superman - Doomsday


This animated film is inspired by the epic comic book "The Death of Superman" which has Superman fighting Doomsday resulting in the tragic death of the Man of Steel. Starring the voices of Adam Baldwin as Clark Kent/Superman, James Marsters as Lex Luthor and Anne Heche as Lois Lane.


11. Iron Man


Marvel's Iron Man was a huge success introducing non-comic book fans to the high flying world of Industrialist heir Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Also starring Terrence Howard as Lt. Colonel James Rhodes and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane.


12. Blade Trinity


The third and in my opinion the best of the series has Blade (Wesley Snipes) teaming up with Whistler's Daughter (Jessica Biel) and Hannibal King (Ryan Reynolds) to take on the vampires and the FBI. Also features Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, Parker Posey as Danica Talos and Dominic Purcell as Dracula.


13. X-Men Origins: Wolverine Available September 15th


This film takes place before the three X-Men movies and centers on the life of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) before he became an X-Men.


14. Daredevil


Ben Affleck stars as the justice seeking lawyer/crime fighter Matt Murdock/Daredevil who doesn't let his blindness stop him from going up against the Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan), Bullseye (Colin Farrell) and a vengeance seeking Elektra (Jennifer Garner).


15. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm has Batman (voice of Kevin Conroy) being falsely accused of murder and has him trying to clear his name and find the real criminal. This little animated gem is considered to be a "cult" hit by fans of Batman: The Animated Series.


16. Hellboy II: The Golden Army


This exciting sequel has Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) up against a ruler trying to unleash an unstoppable army to avenge the mistreatment of the supernatural world from the humans.


17. Batman: Gotham Knight


Batman: Gotham Knight centers on six different stories that show The Dark Knight (voice of Kevin Conroy) becoming the world greatest detective. Also, featuring the voices of Gary Dourdan as Det. Crispus Allen, David McCallum as Alfred, Ana ortiz as Det. Anna Ramirez and Parminder Nagra as Cassandra.


18. Fantastic 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer

The sequel has the Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), The Human Torch (Chris Evans) and The Thing (Michael Chiklis) pairing up with the military and an unlikely ally Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) to try to stop the destructive Silver Surfer (voiced by Laurence Fishburn).


19. Hulk vs


This action-packed animated DVD contains two shorts and features Hulk vs Wolverine and Hulk vs Thor. It definitely has you looking for more.

3 Animated Films for Kids:

1. Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo


Based on the animated series Teen Titans features Robin, Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire attempting to stop the villain, Brushogun while in Tokyo.


2. The Batman vs Dracula


An animated movie based on the animated series The Batman. The movie has Batman (voiced by Rino Romano) trying to take on the legendary vampire Dracula, who is attempting to take over Gotham with help from the Penguin.


3. Superman: Brainiac Attacks


Superman has to take on Brainiac (who formed an alliance with Lex Luthor to defeat Superman) as well as try to save an extremely ailing Lois Lane. Reprising their roles from Superman: The Animated Series are Tim Daly as Clark Kent/Superman and Dana Delany as Lois Lane. This fast-paced movie will keep the little ones attention.
