Museum Exhibit: The Art of Watchmen

What: The Art of Watchmen

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art – MoCCA proudly presents The Art of Watchmen. This exhibition looks at the many incarnations of the Watchmen universe: from Dave Gibbons' original character designs sketches, to the art from the acclaimed graphic novel to the stills from the highly anticipated film by Zack Snyder. The Art of Watchmen is curated by Peter Sanderson and Ellen S. Abramowitz.

On view will be photographs by Clay Enos of the Watchmen movie cast, Watchmen-related photos from director Zack Snyder's "war-room" and original artwork from the graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. The Art of Watchmen explores the way in which the comics and cinema versions each combine fiction with reality to create an alternative universe that provides incisive commentary on our contemporary times. The exhibition will focus on visual iconography from Watchmen, primarily the main characters: The Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach. We will show how each character evolved, through artist Dave Gibbons’ concept sketches to their depiction in the comics culminating in their incarnations on screen.

Art & Culture: A Must See The Joffrey Ballet Winter Program in Chicago

Planning on taking a trip to Chicago this February or live in the Chicago area a Must See for you is the Joffrey Ballet - Winter Program. This majestic show will feature four amazing pieces (all for the prices of one ticket) and will run from Feb. 18th - March 1st. This will give you a chance to see something besides The Nutcracker and indulge your inner culture queen.

The performance pieces are:

Kettentanz
Choreography by Gerald Arpino
Music by Johann Strauss, Sr. and Johann Mayer

A beautiful interpretation of the music of Old Vienna filled with Viennese polkas, gallops and waltzes. Kettentanz was created by Gerald Arpino, co-founder of The Joffrey Ballet.

Mobile
Choreography by Tom Ruud
Music by Aram Kachaturian

This serene meditation was inspired by the mobiles of the famed artist Alexander Calder. The ballet consists of a trio in which a man balances two women in slowly evolving positions that depend on balance and equilibrium, much like a mobile does. A Joffrey Ballet Premiere.

Hand of Fate pas de deux (from Cotillon)
Choreography by George Balanchine
Music by Chabrier

Set in a haunted ballroom, this pas de deux from ballet icon George Balanchine’s Cotillon (1932), reveals the figure of fate as she visits a young girl’s cotillion. The atmospheric pas de deux pairs fate with a young cavalier and leaves the audience wondering what is real and what is fantasy. It shows Balanchine’s great choreographic abilities at a young age.

Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)
Choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky
Reconstructed and staged by Millicent Hodson
Music by Igor Stravinsky

The Rite of Spring stands as one of the most magnificent musical and dance masterpieces of the twentieth century. Choreographed by the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky, the piece caused riots in the streets when it was first staged. It disappeared only to reemerge due to the urging of Robert Joffrey and the painstaking research of Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archur. It is not to be missed.

Dedicated to Change: Kerry Washington

It's refreshing to read this article about Kerry Washington because she is doing much more than just being a celebrity.

--------------------------------------------------------

Hollywood Star Combines Her Love For Acting With Activism

by Marti Parham, Jet Magazine (condensed)

Unlike some movie stars, driving a luxury car isn't important to actress Kerry Washington. She'd rather help sustain the planet by getting around in her eco-friendly hybrid, a Toyota Prius.

But Washington, co-star of the new movie Lakeview Terrace, which debut in theaters at No. 1, does care abut being socially responsible, and her off-screen commitment to environmental, political and social causes is as dynamic as her performances in nearly 30 movies.

"I'm not afraid of terms like activist or humanist or womanist. I'm honored to be associated with those words," she says. But, "when I exercise my right to free speech, I don't do it as an activist, I do it as a responsible American."

Washington's life also reflects her concern for humanity. She's raised money to help stop violence against women, lobbied Congress for more arts funding and campaigned for Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

She joined the V-Day movement, an organization against women's abuse, after seeing a production of Eve Ensler's award-wining play Vagina Monologues. V-Day raises money through benefit performances of the Monologues for shelters and programs that assist women.

"It's very rare that we meet somebody who is not the survivor of abuse or doesn't know someone who is, be it physical or mental," says Washington, who is now a V-Day board member. "I think there are very few of us who are unaffected by violence against women."

Ensler, who has known the actress since 2002, applauds her hard work. "As a board member she's been an incredible advocate and has changed consciousness, given speeches, raised money and has just brought this movement into all kinds of new places."

In April, Washington spoke on Capitol Hill as a member of the Hollywood lobbying group the Creative Coalition, which asked a House committee for higher funding for the National Endowment for the arts.

"I'm really grateful for how much I've benefited from the arts and arts education. The impact that that's had on my life is huge," says the actress who, as a youth, participated in a children's arts program. "I understand how important arts are to our economy, to our communities and to our souls as human beings to maintain our culture. It's just something I'm really passionate about."

Politics are also a passion of this native of The Bronx, New York. After hearing Sen. Barack Obama speak at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, she become one of his biggest supporters, visiting nine states and speaking in several cities on the presidential hopeful's behalf.

"I was really moved. Not just by his speech, but by who was in the audience. I was really blown away by the diversity in his support. I saw that this is a person who really could bring this country together and cross all types of lines.

"I went backstage, met a bunch of people from the campaign and I said, 'I'd like o be involved. As involved as you guys would like for me to be." That's kind of how it took off."

Her mother, Valerie, says Kerry tackled social issues such as AIDS, safe sex and drug abuse during theater productions during her adolescent years in theater.

"Activism is not new to Kerry," the retired professor says abut her daughter. "...It's not surprising that these issues continue to drive her activism along with racial and gender equality and access issues. Her activism is grounding and rewarding."

For the George Washington University grad who holds a degree in Performance Studies, acting will always be her first love. But I still have more that I want to do, be, say and experience.

L’Oreal awaits the decision of courts in the four other European nations where the case was filed. (Cosmetics Design)

About 3,400 Californians whose health insurance was canceled by Kaiser, Health Net and PacifiCare after they got sick will soon receive notification that they may be eligible for new coverage and for compensation for medical bills they paid while they were uninsured. ** Art: Economic Realities Press on Artists’ Outdoor Eden. The 25 year-old open air studios of Laddie John Dill and Ed Ruscha are being encroched upon by the rapidly reviving city of Venice, CA. The city of Los Angeles wants to tear down the fence, pave the space for a parking lot. The project has quickly emerged as a fight between the artistic values that led to the renewal of Venice and the commercial interests that are reshaping the community’s character.

“After the railroad line stopped back there, and Venice began its slow deterioration, this was a really rough part of town,” Mr. Dill said. Now, however, as the boulevard on the other side of the alley has become populated with restaurants, clothing boutiques and a Pinkberry cafe, “this whole thing is symbolic of the gentrification of Venice.”

City bulldozers are expected to begin work on the 100-space parking project soon after a ground-breaking ceremony on Thursday. That has led the owner of the warehouse leased by the two artists to begin preparing a lawsuit seeking to stop the project. (New York Times)

** Can Nintendo’s new, Wii Fit transform the home-fitness market? Scheduled to be released in North America sometime next week, Wii Fit is not meant to replace going to the gym but as an additional fitness option. But in a world of $3,000 elliptical machines and $150-an-hour personal trainers, it has at least a chance of becoming a global, affordable, mass-market interactive home-fitness system. (On its overseas debut last month, it became one of the fastest-selling games ever in Britain.)

The system costs $90 (plus an additional $250 for the basic Wii console, if you don't already have the unit). It uses a television and a sensitive “balance board” placed on the floor to present a few dozen activities, from push-ups to yoga, to more entertaining challenges like balance games and aerobic contests. Nintendo is not aiming Wii Fit at people with a serious exercise regimen. Rather, it is meant to appeal to the person busy with work and family who just wants to have fun getting a little toned at home. (New York Times)

** Supermodel Alek Wek and fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka of Badgley Mischka were honored by the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) at the 30th Annual American Image Awards this Wednesday evening, May 14 in New York. Wek received the "Spirit of a Woman" award for her work as a model and humanitarian, and Badgley and Mischka were named "Designer of the Year." (Fashion Wire Daily)

** Two of Britain’s leading independent schools are planning on boycotting this summer’s exam league tables, claiming they do not give a true picture of academic achievement. St Paul’s School for boys in Barnes, South West London, and Eton, in Windsor, confirmed that they will refuse to submit their GCSE and A level results to the Independent Schools Council for publication in August. They will join Winchester College, which took the same step last year.

Martin Stephen, High Master of St Paul’s said that the league tables kill good teaching and damage education, as they encouraged schools to teach to the test and in some instances to enter pupils for soft qualifications, rather than for more difficult traditional subjects. (London Times)

Special Exhibit of Andy Warhol's Portaits of Ten Jewish Greats

What: The Jewish Museum's Special Exhibit of Warhol's Jews: Ten Portraits Reconsidered

This exhibition of Andy Warhol's ten "Jewish genius" paintings from 1980, presented 28 years after their initial showing at The Jewish Museum. Warhol’s iconic portraits attest to the lasting achievements and fame of these singular figures.

Andy Warhol's Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century (1980) depict renowned luminaries of Jewish culture: Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Brandeis, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Franz Kafka, The Marx Brothers, Golda Meir and Gertrude Stein.

Warhol referred to this pantheon of great thinkers, politicians, performers, and writers as his "Jewish geniuses." Warhol's iconic portraits attest to the lasting achievements and fame of these singular figures. Originally published as a portfolio of silkscreen prints on paper, Warhol was so pleased with the commercial success of his Ten Portraits that he decided to create additional versions of the series as silkscreen paintings on canvas. The Jewish Museum initially showed three sets of paintings and an edition of prints in the fall of 1980. On view in this exhibition are one of the five complete sets of ten paintings, an edition of the final print portfolio, several sketches, a preparatory collage, and the photographs that Warhol used as source images, offering new insights into their development and historical context.
