Book: 100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know (Glamour Magazine)

Before I recycle my Glamour magazines, I always tear out the recipes. I will admit that I have never prepared anything, mainly because I usually end up misplacing the recipes or tossing them (while cleaning). So, I was surprised when I was flipping through a recent Glamour that I saw an advertisement for their book "100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know" by Cindi Leive and other Editors of Glamour. The book contains all of their most popular recipes, which is so convenient because the recipes are now in one place.

I have noticed that some reviewers do not like the title. I see it as, if this book were created by a men's magazine like GQ, the book would have a title something like "100 Recipes Every Man Should Know To Impress Ladies" so I don't see it as offensive. It just goes with the magazine, which is geared towards women of a certain demographics.

I will add this to my wishlist and pick it up the next time I buy books.

If you own this cook book, what did you think about it? Let us know.

COSMO's Fun & Cheap Summer Date Ideas

Don't let a lack of money stop you from having a fun date this summer. Cosmopolitan has some fun and affordable date ideas to help you out. Here are a couple of Cosmo's fun date ideas and for more date ideas pick up the June issue:

*Find The Next Zach Galifianakis

Pick a Thursday night to see cheap stand-up comedy. Clubs boost the number of shows in summer, and midweek tickets almost always cost less than those for Fridays and Saturdays. It's more fun if you sit within heckling distance of the stage, so go early.

Style & Focus Quick Tip:

Not really into comedy clubs, watch or rent a few of your favorite most funniest movies or TV shows. You can enjoy a full night of your favorites and not have to sit through a round of a not so funny comedian. Just don't forget the popcorn and other snacks.

*Escape For Ice Cream

Both working 9 to 5 all summer? Sneak in a middle-of-the-day date by meeting up for an ice cream stand, and head to the nearest green space to sit back, relax, and make out while they melt all over the place. Score more minutes together by getting a local ice cream truck to cruise past your building. Go to allscream.com to find and contact a truck in your area.

Style and Focus Quick Tip:

Can't make time to meet or the ice cream truck not in your area, stop by the store and get ice cream, cones and toppings and take an ice cream break after work. Enjoy it even more by sitting outside and enjoying the rest of the day.

May Anniversary Issue Available April 13

NEW YORK, April 7 -- For 125 years, Good Housekeeping has been the go-to resource for generations of women looking for practical strategies and solutions – from time-saving tips and delicious recipes to stylish, affordable fashion and beauty, advice about relationships and parenting; and valuable information about heath and wellness. The centerpiece of the May anniversary issue, "125 Women Who Changed Our World," celebrates women who have stood up for what they believed and initiated change, improving the lives of women forever. SELF Magazine with Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba, who will be in the upcoming movie Valentine's Day, is on the cover of the February issue of SELF magazine. In it she talks about what she does to de-stress (playing with her daughter, Honor), the cause she cares about (education), what she loves about Ashton Kutcher (his sense of humor) and much more.

I always liked Jessica Alba because she never seemed to be in the middle of the young Hollywood party scene and you never heard of her getting into any trouble. Plus she has great style (but never like she was trying too hard).

Disappointed with Vanity Fair's Class of 2010

I'm very disappointed with the lack of diversity with Vanity Fair's Class of 2010. Did they have a hard time finding talented young actresses. Here are few they could of included: Freida Pinto, Jurnee Smollett, Yifei Liu, Jessica Szohr, Gabourey Sidibe, Kristin Kreuk, and Zoe Kravitz. It's sad that so many of these young actresses are often over looked because they don't fit the so-called "mainstream" view of image, beauty and accomplishments. Shame on you Vanity Fair, for a wasted opportunity.

Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman: Their Funny, Insightful Inner Beauty Tips

No matter what you call it, inner beauty, self-confidence or inner peace.....it makes you feel beautiful inside and out. The stars of the upcoming movies Couples Retreat, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman, share some of their inner beauty tips (including enjoying nature to having a good laugh) in the October issue of SELF magazine.

Kristin Davis

"I try to remember that there's this whole world out there. When I was in Mozambique as an Oxfam ambassador, I helped women expand a chicken business. They were living on less than a dollar a month. They had nothing. But their joy in accomplishing this and their pride in who they were was unbelievable."

Kristen Bell

"Being well-rounded is beautiful. You can't base beauty on one [characteristic], although having humility would be on the top of my list. And being kind. Kindness is so underrated! If I start to wallow in self-pity, I take someone to lunch or make someone laugh. Kindness is like no drug ever."

Malin Akerman

"Taking care of yourself is important, even if you just give yourself an hour on the weekend to find quiet, to find serenity. Whether it's psychological or physical, it feels great, and you look more beautiful."

Are We Too Focused on Youth?

by C. A. Brooks
Style and Focus Lifestyle PR

We live in a youth obsessed culture where everything and everyone has to be young and fresh. Look at some of the new and returning fall shows, that are aimed at teens and early twenty-somethings including the revamped 90's shows like 90210 and Melrose Place. The main cast of both shows are at least 10 years younger than the actors were when the original 90's series aired.

Flip through any glossy fashion and beauty magazine and you will notice there are numerous ads for anti-aging products and not just for your face but for your hair, nails and body. There's big business in anti-aging products and treatments all to make you look younger. Even teenagers are starting to purchase these products. Which is the last thing they should be worrying about is their skin starting to age. I wrote another post on this "Are Anti-Aging Products being over Marketed?"

Take a look at Hollywood, the current hottest celebrities are Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Yes, they are talented but I feel as though they are be over marketed and are being promoted to the wrong target audience (more so with Miley Cyrus than with the Jonas Brothers). Hollywood has always had an obsession with youth but it seems that must be the current pre-requisite now because you don't really need to have any talent just youth. This is included with the number of complaints that I hear from teens about the lack of quality shows for them to watch. Some feel that there's nothing to watch if you're too old for Hannah Montana and not into the Gossip Girl type shows. So, what's left for them to watch?

As a marketer and publicist, I think overly promoting youth is not a good thing because constantly pushing youth places a negative connotation towards aging and suggest that you're only of some worth or value if you're in your teens and early twenties. It gives off a fear of once you step out of that age bracket you're useless and your life will no longer be any fun. Which is certainly not true. Now there are a group of people out there trying to chase youth and that's kind of like running on a treadmill trying to reach the finish line.

By only concentrating on youth, you decrease the value and experiences that we gain as we age. I think more attention should be focused on one's talent and experiences and instead of on looks and aging. Yes, it's pipe dream but maybe it'll happen one day.

Elle Decor Features Socialite Aerin Lauder's NY Homes

Elle Decor features the Manhattan apartment and Hampton home of Aerin Lauder in the July/August issue. Lauder (who is also featured on the cover) is the granddaughter of the legendary Estée Lauder and currently serves as the senior vice president and creative director of Estée Lauder.

Quote from the article:

Lauder honors Estée’s style, but that doesn’t mean everything has stayed the same. She and her husband, Eric Zinterhofer, have expanded the house (which she inherited from her grandmother), where they spend most weekends and holidays, to better accommodate their active life with their two young sons. And not every tradition remains valid. She laughs as she reports, “Last year a friend decided to light up one of my grandfather’s cigars from the 1960s that we had kept around for sentimental reasons. He said, ‘This tastes funny,’ and I said, ‘Well, it should!’”

What Were They Thinking: Miley Cyrus on the Cover of Glamour Magazine

Editorial by
Style and Focus Lifestyle PR

Why is a teenager on the current May cover of a popular women's magazine? From a marketing standpoint, I feel this is another gimmick that Glamour is using to try to sell magazines. They don't have to stoop to the ongoing youth/teen craze by placing a 16 year old on the cover. There are so many women they could of chosen for example: Malin Akerman (The Watchmen), Jill Scott (HBO's The No. 1 Ladies Dective Agency), Jennifer Hudson, Eliza Dushku (Fox's The Doll House), Zoe Saldana (from the upcoming Star Trek movie) or Erica Durance (CW's Smallville).

Cyrus does not offer anything to Glamour's target market and it makes it seem like they are just trying to increase their magazine sales from Cyrus' fan base. The bulk of her target audience are the pre-teens whom are between the ages of 11-13. They don't exactly fit the Glamour demographics.

In some way the editors knew that she was too young for the magazine because they edited the cover. If you noticed they edited out anything to do with sex.

What's next Abigail Breslin as the next cover model? All joking aside, Glamour really needs to figure out who their target market is, other wise they risk putting off their readers and in this current economic state that would be a costly mistake.

Casual Glam Inspirational Bedrooms from Domino Magazine

One of my favorite home decor magazine's, Domino will no longer be hitting the shelves. The current March issue will be their last issue.

As much as most gals want a sophisticated glamorous bedroom, it doesn't always fit our busy lifestyles but it doesn't stop us from trying maybe with a few more casual pieces mixed in with the ultra glam ones such as lush fabrics. Here are nine casual glam bedroom examples from Domino.

Gisele Bundchen is (RED) Hot for ELLE magazine

The February issue of ELLE magazine (currently on newsstands) features the lovely Gisele Bündchen on over 30 covers (which is a publishing first). Inside the magazine will show Scarlett Johansson and Bono working to fight AIDS in Africa for (RED). Below are a few quotes from Scarlett Johansson and Bono from ELLE magazine:

On the cover Gisele is clothed in (PRODUCT) RED gear. Inside, Scarlett Johansson shares private details and photos of her travels to Rwanda in a personal essay and (RED) Founder and U2 Front man, Bono publishes a very personal letter.

Quotes from Scarlett Johansson from her personal essay on her Rwanda Travels

Scarlett on AIDS tests:

“When I admitted that I’d taken two HIV tests, everyone was completely horrified, the implication being that I was leading this wild lifestyle,” says Scarlett Johansson, whose decision to join Bono in the (RED) initiative was a “no brainer.” “I was only being responsible.”

On (RED):

When you purchase (PRODUCT) RED items – from partners including Apple, Armani, Converse and the Gap – up to 50 percent of profits go directly to fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa. Forty cents a day translates to the two antiretroviral pills needed to survive.

“If that can be achieved by buying a couple of pairs of Converse, it’s worth a shot.”

Quotes from Bono from his Letter

Bono on Women:

“I don’t believe in biological destiny. I think women care more because women bear more of the burden.”

On Fashion and Philanthropy:

“Which brings me, improbably, to shopping. Not everybody is able to march to the barricades – not everybody owns a pair of proper military boots – but there’s something you can do even in Manolos.”

On AIDS in Africa:

“Six years ago, I was traveling across Africa. AIDS at that time and place was a death sentence… the rest of the world made sympathetic noises – but did little more than that. Our Science and technology, it turned out, were more advanced than our conscience…we lacked the resolve.”

News Bites: Spider-Man, Charities, and more

** Coming to a Comic Bookstore Near You. Spider-Man Saves the Day!!!. In the upcoming Spider-Man comic, Peter Parker goes up against one of his rogue gallery who is attempting to thwart the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. According to Marvel, the comic will be written by Zeb Wells with artwork by Todd Nauck and Frank D'Armata.

Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said, "when we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics' Marvel Universe," says . "Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man." The much anticipated AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583 will be hitting comic book shelves nationwide January 14th. (Marvel News)

** Macy's to Close 11 Stores. The Cincinnati company said it will close 11 underperforming stores in nine states, which will affect 960 employees. "The decision to close stores is difficult, and often occurs when the market changes, new competing shopping centers are opened nearby to existing older ones, or when customers change shopping habits. In the store closing process, we are committed to treating affected associates with respect and openness," Chief Executive Officer Terry Lundgren said in a press release. For the list of closing stores click here. (MSN)

** According to Fashion Week Daily, New York magazine's biannual spin-off New York Look will not be publishing a Spring 2009 issue, and a Fall edition doesn't appear likely. The content featured in the publication, is devoted to coverage of runway shows in New York, Paris and Milan. Instead the issue will be folded into New York magazine's Fall Fashion issue.

** Actress Alyssa Milano is engaged to Hollywood agent David Bugliari. Bugliari proposed just before Christmas, according to Us magazine. The pair has been dating for more than a year.

** Financial Crisis Snuffs Out Perfume Retailer. Perfume retailer Passion for Perfume went into administration this week after the company directors failed to find a buyer for the struggling business. Administrators at Deloitte said the company made 185 redundancies across its 45 stores on New Year’s Eve and let go of 9 employees at its head office in Manchester.

Passion for Perfume was established in 2004 and sold perfume online and through its network of shops in the UK. In recent times, the company fell into financial difficulties that it blamed on ‘challenging trading conditions and reduced consumer demand’. The fragrance market has been stagnant for a while, growing barely above zero in Europe since 2002, according to figures from market researchers Euromonitor. The failure of Passion for Perfume follows the demise of a number of other leading retailers in the UK. Woolworths, Adams and Zavvi are among those to be placed in administration in recent weeks. (Cosmetics Design)

** TNT has picked up Jada Pinkett Smith's new medical drama "Time Heals," with a 10-episode order. The series is produced by and stars Pinkett Smith. The show also features David Julian Hirsh (TBS' "Lovebites"), Laura Kenly, Christina Moore ("90210") and Suleka Mathew ("Men in Trees"). (Black Entertainment News)

** Princes William and Harry are working together to raise charitable funds for schools in Uganda for the Henry Van Straubenzee Memorial Fund. It was named after a young man who died in a car crash in 2002 and whose family is very close to the House of Windsor. Henry was a classmate at the Ludgrove prep school with Prince Harry while William is friends with Henry's older brother Tom.

The charity helps the school where Henry van Straubenzee was planning to work during a year off before university. Thanks to efforts by the princes and other friends, the organization has expanded to assist 11 schools in the African nation. On Jan. 8, the princes will attend a reception to officially launch the charity and mark their patronage. The occasion marks another milestone in the princes' working lives, coming just days after they announced the formal start of their new office, complete with "cyphers," or logos. (People magazine)

Victoria Beckham's 10 Rules of Style for Men

This article can be found archived in the October issue of DETAILS magazine with Daniel Radcliffe on the cover.

1. Style isn’t about money. One of the nicest outfits on a man is a pair of jeans, some old, messed-up boots, a simple white tee, and a vintage leather belt. You don’t have to spend a lot. It’s about mixing and matching and getting things that fit properly.

2. Men who wear skinny jeans won’t be wearing my jeans. I don’t think jeans should be tight around their bollocks. I don’t want to see that part of a guy’s anatomy all squashed in.

3. What to wear on a first date is a tricky one. You don’t want to be too dressed up or not dressed up enough. It totally depends where you’re going. Wear something you’re comfortable in, because you’re going to be slightly nervous.

4. I don’t mind a vintage T-shirt with a logo on it that’s tongue-in-cheek. But if a man were to just have a huge logo on his chest, no. I think that’s very unattractive.

5. It’s romantic when a guy makes an effort. For our anniversary recently, David had all these beautiful flowers placed in our garden and he had someone come in and cook and he had nice music playing. We put the kids to bed and then we spent the night together, just talking in front of the fire.

6. Boys don’t have nearly as much fun with fashion as girls do.

7. I think a man always has to look clean, to start. And obviously he has to smell nice. Grooming is really important.

8. You have to be very careful when you start dyeing your hair. I can’t bear it when men start to lose their hair color and they give it a rinse—blue, black, purple.

9. I really don’t like it when guys wear tight tops—like those cycling-looking, Lance Armstrong-inspired ones—trying to show off muscles and the fact that they’ve been at the gym a lot.

10. It’s cool for a woman to look like she cares, but I don’t think it’s as cool for a man to look like he’s spent hours in front of the mirror. A man that doesn’t try too hard to look good is sexy.

Tom Ford's 10 Rules of Style for Men

This article can be found in the December issue of DETAILS magazine with Tom Cruise on the cover.

1. I don’t believe in playing around much with suit cuts. I like a fairly classic shape that gives a man strong shoulders, a fitted waist, and long legs. Classic simplicity always works.

2. Someone who is secure enough to be very present when relating to another person is sexy. In other words, a good listener always lands who he wants.

3. When mixing patterns, don’t think about it too much—just throw it together.

4. I hate the trend of short suit jackets. When a man’s butt is showing below the bottom of his jacket, I think it makes him look like a female flight attendant from the back—not my idea of sexy.

5. With jewelry, I actually like bracelets more than anything else, but they have to be small and simple. Cary Grant always wore a simple gold bracelet with his watch, and I think that was very chic.

6. If you’re careful not to overuse Botox, then yes, why shouldn’t you use it? A little bit of it between the brows can make you look less stern and more approachable. Who needs to frown, anyway?

7. Just like girls need to learn to be comfortable in heels before they go out in them for the first time, a man should try wearing a suit throughout a normal day. I do most things in a suit—and sometimes even in a tuxedo—and so I’m really comfortable in one.

8. When it comes to grooming, keep earwax out of the ears and keep stray hairs and flakes of skin in check and you should be good to go. In the morning, I put ice cubes on my eyes and use lots of Visine.

9. Time and silence are the most luxurious things today.

10. There’s one indulgence every man should try in his lifetime: If you’re straight, sleep with a man at least once, and if you’re gay, don’t go through life without sleeping with a woman. Either way, you might be surprised at how natural it will feel if you can get past the mind-fuck of stereotypes. In the end, it’s just another person that you are relating to in a physical way.

Do Magazines Need A Signature Look?

By Style and Focus Lifestyle PR

I have a sorority sister who sells ad space in magazines and yesterday we stopped by a local cafe to buy a coffee (for her) and spiced pumpkin chai tea (for me) to just sit and catch-up. Some how we got on the subject of signature looks of magazines and Glamour came to mind of not having a signature look anymore.

As much as I like Glamour (I've been a long time reader since high school) I feel like it doesn't have a signature or unique look anymore. The improvements seem to have turned it into a whole new magazine. The layouts, articles and even the cover reminds me too much of Marie Claire. Other magazines such as Cosmopolitan have updated and given the magazine a fresh new look but it still has the feel of a Cosmopolitan magazine. As with any other product, improvements are important and sometimes necessary to stay competitive but with some products you still want to leave something that can be distinguishable to your clients (readers).

We were both very disappointed with Glamour's latest issue (November) with the 3D. From a marketing standpoint the 3D section is way to gimmicky and doesn't really add any value to the magazine except possibly to increase sales.

Once I got home, I starting flipping through a few older Glamour '08 issues sitting on the coffee table and noticed that you can really see a difference between the older and the last three (Sept., Oct., and Nov.) issues.

I think magazines should be updated with new looks but still have a signature look to it. The signature look will make it standout amongst all the other magazines on the shelf giving readers a unique feel for that magazine. Other wise what would be the point of buying that particular magazine if it's not different than the others.
