Motivating the Next Generation of Influential Women, Cover Star Michelle Obama Speaks About Life in the White House, Her Marriage, and Her Role as Mom-in-Chief

May Anniversary Issue Available April 13

NEW YORK, April 7 -- For 125 years, Good Housekeeping has been the go-to resource for generations of women looking for practical strategies and solutions – from time-saving tips and delicious recipes to stylish, affordable fashion and beauty, advice about relationships and parenting; and valuable information about heath and wellness. In May, the leading women's service magazine devotes its 125th anniversary collector's issue to the women whose nerve, imagination and passion have changed history. The May anniversary issue is on newsstands April 13.

Editor in Chief Rosemary Ellis interviews First Lady Michelle Obama, who graces the cover, and is the ultimate inspiration for modern women and Good Housekeeping readers: as a wife and mother, she makes family time a priority, she balances an extremely busy job and still finds time to take care of herself, most notably with what she calls "killer" workouts, extra early in the morning.

The centerpiece of the May anniversary issue, "125 Women Who Changed Our World," celebrates women who have stood up for what they believed and initiated change, improving the lives of women forever. In honor of this anniversary feature, Good Housekeeping asked readers to select the top 10 women who deserved special recognition. The results for "America's Top 10" poll are, in order:

1. Oprah Winfrey: Queen of all media

2. Hillary Rodham Clinton: Secretary of State, former First Lady, former U.S. senator

SELF Magazine with Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba, who will be in the upcoming movie Valentine's Day, is on the cover of the February issue of SELF magazine. In it she talks about what she does to de-stress (playing with her daughter, Honor), the cause she cares about (education), what she loves about Ashton Kutcher (his sense of humor) and much more.

I always liked Jessica Alba because she never seemed to be in the middle of the young Hollywood party scene and you never heard of her getting into any trouble. Plus she has great style (but never like she was trying too hard).

Disappointed with Vanity Fair's Class of 2010

I'm very disappointed with the lack of diversity with Vanity Fair's Class of 2010. Did they have a hard time finding talented young actresses. Here are few they could of included: Freida Pinto, Jurnee Smollett, Yifei Liu, Jessica Szohr, Gabourey Sidibe, Kristin Kreuk, and Zoe Kravitz. It's sad that so many of these young actresses are often over looked because they don't fit the so-called "mainstream" view of image, beauty and accomplishments. Shame on you Vanity Fair, for a wasted opportunity.

Catching up on TV and Award Show Fashions

I'm a little behind on my TV shows, I taped Supernatural last Thursday and watched it over the weekend. Who else is watching this show? I absolutely love it and that episode was really great especially returning after a break with Sam and Dean going undercover in a mental health facility.

Other shows I'm trying to catch up on are: CSI:NY, NCIS:LA, Demons(on BBC) and Medium. Psych will be coming back this Wednesday and I can't wait it's one of my favorite shows. It's so funny.

I'm not a big award show person but I like to check in to see some of the fashions and I thought Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston and Zoe Saldana (pictures below) looked amazing at the Golden Globes (yeah I know a week behind). I didn't watch the SAG awards which I hate I missed because I wanted to see Betty White being honored.

My Top 3 Best Dressed at the Golden Globes:

Halle Berry

I love this dress, it's sexy without being overtly. It's lingerie inspired and elegant and classy. Halle Berry always looks amazing.

Jennifer Aniston

This dress just screams "Eat Your Heart Out" to all her exes. She looked stunning and amazing.

Zoe Saldana

I just love the pretty ruffles and bold color. This dress just seem perfect for her because it makes her look beautiful.

Hairspiration: Natalie Portman

I'm going to be attending an engagement party tonight and I want a simple yet elegant hairstyle. Nothing too fussy or overly complicated. Which is why I love, Natalie Portman's sleek and simple bun. It would be easy to style and it's gives off this effortless look of sophistication and glamour.

It easy to style, with a slight side part and pull hair back in a slight side bun (maybe add a twist or two) and spritz a little hairspray (to keep flyaway in place).

'SNL' Brittany Murphy parody removed from the Web

** Style and Focus PR would like to send out condolences to the family of Brittany Murphy.

It's been such a long time since I've watched an episode of Saturday Night Live. I stopped watching because I no longer found it funny. There's no original material like with the old skits. Lately, the show just seems to be anything but funny especially doing a skit on an actress who was allegedly taking drugs.

'SNL' Brittany Murphy parody removed from the Web

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- You can search the whole Web but you won't find it anywhere.

A clip from "Saturday Night Live" parodying the late Brittany Murphy has been quietly yanked from the Web, various blogs have noticed.

On December 5, the NBC show aired the sketch during "Weekend Update" in which cast member Abby Elliott performed an impression of Murphy, who had recently been fired from a film project. The impression portrayed Murphy as spacey and living in the past.

After her death Sunday, the sketch disappeared from Hulu.com, the online video repository co-owned by NBC Universal and News Corp.

The quiet removal prompted many bloggers and online viewers to question the sketch's tastefulness and the decision to erase it without notice. A publicist for "Saturday Night Live" didn't respond to requests for comment.

Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman: Their Funny, Insightful Inner Beauty Tips

No matter what you call it, inner beauty, self-confidence or inner peace.....it makes you feel beautiful inside and out. The stars of the upcoming movies Couples Retreat, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman, share some of their inner beauty tips (including enjoying nature to having a good laugh) in the October issue of SELF magazine.

Kristin Davis

"I try to remember that there's this whole world out there. When I was in Mozambique as an Oxfam ambassador, I helped women expand a chicken business. They were living on less than a dollar a month. They had nothing. But their joy in accomplishing this and their pride in who they were was unbelievable."

Kristen Bell

"Being well-rounded is beautiful. You can't base beauty on one [characteristic], although having humility would be on the top of my list. And being kind. Kindness is so underrated! If I start to wallow in self-pity, I take someone to lunch or make someone laugh. Kindness is like no drug ever."

Malin Akerman

"Taking care of yourself is important, even if you just give yourself an hour on the weekend to find quiet, to find serenity. Whether it's psychological or physical, it feels great, and you look more beautiful."

** Must Read Article: Chinese Babies Stolen By Officials For Foreign Adoption (click link to read in full)(from the Los Angeles Times)

Since the early 1990s, more than 80,000 Chinese children have been adopted abroad, the majority to the United States. The conventional wisdom is that the babies, mostly girls, were abandoned by their parents because of the traditional preference for boys and China's restrictions on family size. No doubt, that was the case for tens of thousands of the girls.

But some parents are beginning to come forward to tell harrowing stories of babies who were taken away by coercion, fraud or kidnapping -- sometimes by government officials who covered their tracks by pretending that the babies had been abandoned. Parents who say their children were taken complain that officials were motivated by the $3,000 per child that adoptive parents pay orphanages.

"Our children were exported abroad like they were factory products," said Yang Libing, a migrant worker from Hunan province whose daughter was seized in 2005. He has since learned that she is in the United States.

** According to TV blog insiders, numerous fans of CW's Supernatural (which stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) are upset and may boycott the upcoming 5th episode that will feature Paris Hilton. Upset that the show will include her instead of an actress who is actually know for her acting abilities is the general consensus of many of the complaints. While others (including non fans of the series) are planning to watch just to see her killed off (many hope in a gruesome way).

** Disney Faces Rights Issues Over Marvel. According to the New York Times, Walt Disney’s proposed $4 billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment may come with a headache: newly filed claims challenging Marvel’s long-term rights to some of its superhero characters. Heirs to the comic book artist Jack Kirby, a creator of characters and stories behind Marvel mainstays like “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four,” last week sent 45 notices of copyright termination to Marvel and Disney, as well as Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, and other companies that have been using the characters.

The notices expressed an intent to regain copyrights to some of Mr. Kirby’s creations as early as 2014, according to a statement disclosed on Sunday by Toberoff & Associates, a law firm in Los Angeles that helped win a court ruling last year returning a share of the copyright in Superman to heirs of one of the character’s creators, Jerome Siegel.

** Singer and actress Jill Scott (HBO's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) has just signed on to star in Lifetime's "Sin of the Mother". Based on the Carleen Rice novel "Orange Mint and Honey". The movie is described by Variety as focusing on a grad student who returns home to face her abusive, alcoholic mother only to discover that her mom is sober and has a 3-year-old daughter and new life. "Sins of the Mother" is due to premiere on the Lifetime Movie Network in 2010. Jill Scott is also appearing in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too?" in 2010. (Black Talent News)

** London Mayor Wants Museum Visitors to Pay. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London said he had been impressed, during his visit to New York last week, with its semi-voluntary admission system. Although New York’s museums are officially free, each one has a range of entry fees and visitors are usually made to feel compelled to pay. Mr Johnson said he had no interest in coercing people, but felt that a similar system could work in London.

Free museums are considered one of the Britain’s biggest cultural attractions, particularly in London. Mr Johnson said that "cynical young people” had approached him and questioned the value of offering free museums. He said that if adults paid a voluntary fee, it would show youth the importance of the cultural institutions.

Mr. Johnson made his comments at the Victoria and Albert museum, in Kensington, West London, during a discussion with Kevin Spacey, the actor, and other cultural figures about the impact of the recession on the arts world. Mr. Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic, warned that many arts institutions were suffering from reduced corporate donations and sponsorship deals during the economic downturn. He said: “I believe that, far from being a luxury in our lives, the arts and culture are a necessity. The creative industries lead the UK economy and are the envy of the world". (London Times)

** According to Us Weekly, Zooey Deschanel married Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard on Saturday in Seattle. Congratulations!

Joe Jonas = Great PR for the Special Olympics

In this day in age, where young celebrities are in the news mostly for the scandal of the day or week, it's nice to hear that Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers was helping to raise funds and promote the Special Olympics with his Joe Jonas IWin Fun Run that will benefit the Jonas Brothers' Change for the Children Foundation. The event was held today in San Antonio, TX.

I have a family member who has special needs and she loves to compete in the local special olympics. It's also an organization and cause that I help and support. I hope the Special Olympics continue to gain funds and support especially since Eunice Kennedy Shriver recently passed away.

Kellogg Company and Katalyst Media Join Forces to Confront Hunger in the United States

Kellogg Company and Katalyst Media Join Forces to Confront Hunger in the United States

Katalyst, in Partnership with Kellogg Company, Release a "People-Powered" Web Video to Raise Awareness About the Issue of Hunger

BATTLE CREEK, Mich., June 22 -- Kellogg Company (NYSE: K) today announced a transformational partnership with Katalyst, a studio for social media co-founded by Ashton Kutcher (www.twitter.com/aplusk) and Jason Goldberg. The partnership will raise awareness of the growing hunger epidemic in the United States and encourage consumers to donate to Feeding America, the nation's leading hunger relief organization, at the KelloggCares Facebook(R) Page at www.facebook.com/kelloggcares. Recent reports show that one in eight Americans is struggling with hunger, and food banks across the country are challenged to keep up with rising demand.

As part of its ongoing commitment to fight hunger, Kellogg teamed up with Katalyst to spotlight the issue through a new online video, directed by Demi Moore (www.twitter.com/mrskutcher). The video can be found on the KelloggCares Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/kelloggcares. It features user-generated content submitted by consumers moved to end hunger following requests that @aplusk (Ashton Kutcher) and @mrskutcher (Demi Moore) posted on their respective Twitter feeds and Facebook Pages.

"We are grateful to be working with Kellogg on such a meaningful project and excited to be creating people-powered content for social media networks as a powerful tool for change," said Kutcher, co-founder of Katalyst. "Innovative partnerships like this one demonstrate the good that companies can do when resources are pooled. The Katalyst team has been inspired by the thousands of voices that have emerged on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms dedicated to ending hunger in America."

The goal of the video is to reach Americans through social media channels and encourage them to work together to help replenish food banks and feed the hungry by making donations to Feeding America. On the KelloggCares Facebook Page, consumers can become a fan, make a monetary donation to Feeding America and find out about other ways they can help fight hunger in their local communities.

"Hunger is an issue that often gets overlooked, especially here in the United States. Having food readily available is something that we too easily can take for granted. And yet we know, especially in these times, that many people in the United States go to bed hungry. That's why it's critical that we come together to shed light on the issue," said Moore. "The collective spirit of the American people can do extraordinary things. It is our hope that this video and partnership with Kellogg Company will draw attention to this important issue and help make a difference for the 36 million Americans struggling with hunger."

Kellogg hopes that by reaching consumers where they get much of their information - via the social web - it will engage even more people in the fight against hunger.

"Facebook gives people the power to share and connect around issues that are important to them," said Tom Arrix, Vice President of U.S. Sales at Facebook. "We are proud to be working with Kellogg and Katalyst to raise awareness for hunger, an issue that affects millions of people everyday, and giving Facebook users an interactive and unique way to engage on this important issue."

In addition to being available on the KelloggCares Facebook Page, the video will be distributed through a number of other social media channels to increase awareness of hunger and encourage donations. Katalyst will help distribute the video through the company's online social networks, and Kellogg will include information about this initiative on tens of millions of Kellogg's cereal boxes later this year.

"We are excited to partner with Kellogg Company, a longstanding supporter of Feeding America, in this important campaign to grow awareness and engagement in the fight against domestic hunger," said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. "Tremendous strides have been made, but as the support in the fight against hunger grows, so does the demand for food. No American should go hungry and there is always more that can be done. We are grateful to Kellogg for their leadership and dedication to our cause."

This initiative is part of an ongoing commitment from Kellogg Company to help fight hunger. In April, the Company announced that it is donating an entire day's worth of cereal production - more than 55 million cereal servings - to Feeding America. The donation of 3.5 million pounds of cereal is worth approximately $10 million.

"Kellogg Company is deeply committed to fighting hunger," said David Mackay, president and CEO, Kellogg Company. "Through this innovative, new initiative, we hope that we will engage even more consumers who will join us by giving what they can to Feeding America."

Kellogg Company has been a committed donor to Feeding America since they were founded. Over the past 10 years, Kellogg has donated more than 224 million pounds of food to Feeding America. Over the last five years, Kellogg has contributed more than $40 million in cash and $120 million in product to various charitable organizations around the world. What Were They Thinking: Miley Cyrus on the Cover of Glamour Magazine

Editorial by
Style and Focus Lifestyle PR

Why is a teenager on the current May cover of a popular women's magazine? From a marketing standpoint, I feel this is another gimmick that Glamour is using to try to sell magazines. They don't have to stoop to the ongoing youth/teen craze by placing a 16 year old on the cover. There are so many women they could of chosen for example: Malin Akerman (The Watchmen), Jill Scott (HBO's The No. 1 Ladies Dective Agency), Jennifer Hudson, Eliza Dushku (Fox's The Doll House), Zoe Saldana (from the upcoming Star Trek movie) or Erica Durance (CW's Smallville).

Cyrus does not offer anything to Glamour's target market and it makes it seem like they are just trying to increase their magazine sales from Cyrus' fan base. The bulk of her target audience are the pre-teens whom are between the ages of 11-13. They don't exactly fit the Glamour demographics.

In some way the editors knew that she was too young for the magazine because they edited the cover. If you noticed they edited out anything to do with sex.

What's next Abigail Breslin as the next cover model? All joking aside, Glamour really needs to figure out who their target market is, other wise they risk putting off their readers and in this current economic state that would be a costly mistake.

Style and Focus News Bites: Barbie, Brad and Birthday Visits

** According to the Associated Press, West Virginia Deomocratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge is proposing to ban the sale of Barbie dolls and others like her in his state. He wants to outlaw the dolls, because the dolls influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.

--------
My Response:

This is one of the dumbest things I have read, with all the things going on economically he want to go after Barbie. It's the parents responsibility to instill good judgement and values to their children and banning an iconic doll is not going to change our cultures obsession with youth and beauty. So, is he also going to ban gentlemen magazines because they hold a certain stereotypical view towards beauty on how women are suppose to look. Yeah, but I guess I don't see that happening any time soon.

** In the New York magazine article, "Why Were Milan’s Runways So Whitewashed?" details the lack of diversity among models used during fashion week in Milan.

** Shoe designer Yohji Yamamoto has signed a deal with Salvatore Ferragamo to create a new collection of ergonomic shoes called Salvatore Ferragamo for Yohji Yamamoto. ** eBay is adding to its image as being a green company. Alan Marks, senior vice president for global communications at eBay says that its business model encourages reselling old items rather than throwing them out, and buying used merchandise rather than making new stuff reduces carbon emissions that go along with production. “We never set out to be a green business,” Mr. Marks said. “We realized it’s intrinsic.” To promote its green credentials eBay will team with Hearst to run ads Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and Esquire.

EBay is rather late to the game in making claims about its environmentalism. Large corporations like General Electric and BP have run advertisements for years promoting their environmental efforts, for instance. “Over the last couple of years, protecting the environment has become as American as apple pie and Derek Jeter,” said Michael Brune, the executive director of the activist group Rainforest Action Network. “Every company wants to at least be seen as being friendly to the environment.”

Mr. Brune said he had mixed feelings about eBay’s claim for its green business model. “A lot of the things sold on eBay are new merchandise, and last time I checked the Postal Service still used fossil fuels for all of their planes and their trucks, so it’s not sustainable,” he said, referring to how eBay sellers ship items. “It’s fair to say that buying used goods on eBay is better for the environment, but let’s not get carried away and say this is the greenest thing since recycled paper.” (New York Times)

** As Hotels Struggle for Business, Some Guests Find an Upside to the Struggling Economy. The upside for many guests are: bargain rates, less-crowded hotels and rooms available at the last minute at most popular hotels. Many also are enjoying improved service and special treatment, such as free upgrades to suites or club floors, as hotels roll out the red carpet to try to attract and hold on to customers. However, despite the good fortune of guests, many hotels have laid off workers or decreased their work hours resulting in guests having to wait longer to check in and out, have rooms made up and have cars returned by the valets. Luxury hotels are feeling the biggest decline in service, many travelers who used to stay at luxury hotels "are trading down," staying at less-expensive ones, says Will Marks, an industry analyst for JMP Securities. Hilary Duff and DKNY Jeans Launch Femme for DKNY Jeans

NEW YORK, Feb. 5 -- New York, Hilary Duff and DKNY Jeans announce their new design partnership and the launch of their collaborative apparel line, pairing an international superstar with a global fashion powerhouse.

Multi-platinum recording artist, actress and entrepreneur Hilary Duff is co-designing a collection of special pieces with DKNY Jeans brand called Femme for DKNY Jeans. The collection mixes rocker chic with a soft touch, featuring innovative ideas, unexpected details and multiple functions. Each piece is unique; each look makes a statement. The line will debut in fine department and specialty stores nationwide in August 2009, marking the debut of Hilary's new beauty and lifestyle brand, Femme.

"As a young adult, I've chosen to dedicate my interest in fashion and design to creating a sophisticated upstairs collection," said Hilary Duff. "I took time finding the right fashion house to collaborate with in a design partnership. I have always adored and worn DKNY Jeans, so it made perfect sense to reach out to them. We hit it off immediately, sharing a design vision offering something special for young women like me."

"Hilary Duff's influence with this particular demographic cannot be overstated. From film, TV, to fragrance, there's an ability to connect with her on so many levels," says Kevin Monogue, President of DKNY Jeans, "The design partnership has been effortless, as our sensibilities are perfectly aligned; she's edgy and still feminine, embraces individuality, and offers a bold, experimental way of interpreting trends. We are so excited about what is being developed for Femme. It has been, and continues to be, a dream collaboration."

The Femme for DKNY Jeans line takes its inspiration from Hilary's love of feminine elements like poppies, sequins, and shine, mixed with tougher vinyl, menswear fabrics and motorcycle details. Hard and soft, provocative and powerful. A key theme is versatility: sweater tunics with removable cowl scarves, tees with detachable and printed necklaces, charmeuse cozies that layer like scarves, skinny jeans with adjustable belt loops for thin or wide belts. Black denim is the foundation, with vinyl leggings, tissue weight tees and strappy dresses rounding out the Fall assortment. The retail price range for the collection is $39 for a tee to $129 for an outerwear piece.

DKNY Jeans will support the launch of Femme for DKNY Jeans with a comprehensive marketing campaign, reaching the consumer through all media touch points, including national print, outdoor and online advertising, experiential promotions, in-store events, movie, TV and tour integrations as well as a dedicated behind-the-scenes web series showcasing the design process.
