Has Comic-Con Become too Hollywood?

This year the focus seemed to be on all the "celebrities" and whatever project they were promoting at Comic-Con. The convention seems to have lost some of it's laid back "nerdy" appeal and fun atmosphere. Hollywood seems to have taken over. Whereas in the past it use to be a healthy balance between the two sides.

I think it's cool that Sci-Fi/Comic Book movies and TV shows are promoted there but the celebrities shouldn't take away from the event.

What do you think: Has Comic-Con become too Hollywood?

Movie Bowl Not Super Bowl Party

Hi, I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Who watched the Superbowl? Well.........I didn't. My friends and I decided to have a Movie Bowl instead. I'm not sure who came up with the idea but we all just decided we'd would rather watch a few movies, eat good food (including lots of desserts) and have fun. So, we put the movies in four categories: Best Fashion, Inspirational, Best Vampires and Epic Sci-Fi Battles. After each set of movies, we voted and the winners got small gifts (for $10 or less) like lip gloss, hand lotions, nail polish, bracelets, etc.

Best Fashion:
Sex and the City vs Devils Wears Prada
Winner: Sex and the City

Inspirational:
The Last Holiday vs Julie & Julia
Winner: Tie

Best Vampires:
Underworld vs Twilight
Winner: Underworld

Epic Sci-Fi Battles:
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith vs Star Trek (the new one)
Winner: Almost a tie but most of the girls picked Star Trek for Chris Pine. My choice was Star Wars but oh well.

Sorry, boys we may try to watch the game with you next year, but we had so much fun, we might do it again. We'll see.

Skylight One Hanson Hosts 'It's All About Brooklyn!' to Officially Launch the Taste of Brooklyn's High-End Potential Industry

Event to Showcase Select Brooklyn Small Businesses and Introduce a Beautiful, Historic Venue to the Community

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Jan. 20 -- The Skylight Group will officially introduce its new high-end Brooklyn venue to the New York special events industry at a launch party this Thursday, January 21st. "It's All About Brooklyn!" will feature hors d'oeuvres, drinks and desserts from many local vendors to show traditionally Manhattan-focused event planners the current caliber of the borough's offerings against the backdrop of one of its historical masterpieces. The 15,000 square-foot venue is located on the ground floor of One Hanson Place, a beautifully refurbished residential tower that for years was the iconic and historic Williamsburg Bank Building.

The original bank hall serves as the main event space for Skylight One Hanson. The venue features original details including intricate marble floors, carved teller stations and an impressive 40-foot mosaic of New York as a Dutch colony. It also boasts a vaulted 63-foot ceiling with images of the zodiac in the night sky. On Thursday, party guests will be given a sneak peek into the original bank vault, which provides a modern art deco contrast to the Romanesque space above, and will also be available for events. The inner workings of the vault's jaw-dropping 36-ton doors will be beautifully lit by L & M Sound and Light to enable the NYC event industry to discover a new use for this historic underground space.

The event will showcase some of Brooklyn's finest local businesses, including:

Great Performances, the exclusive caterer for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which sits adjacent to Skylight One Hanson and is best known for crafting food and beverage menus that celebrate the borough's distinctive flavor

Stinky BKLYN, a European-style cheese shop with a serious Brooklyn edge located just a mile from One Hanson

Wine Cellar Sorbets, purveyors that cater to the sweet tooth

Brooklyn Brewery, which started with a stand on the streets of NYC, and is now one of the 40 largest breweries in the country

Cakeman Raven, one of Brooklyn's most cherished bakeries, will provide a custom-designed cake that Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will cut towards the end of the event.

"Skylight One Hanson offers a beautiful event space in Brooklyn's most iconic architectural landmark. Plus, it's conveniently located for guests arriving from the 'outer borough' of Manhattan – and I guarantee that once they see all that Brooklyn has to offer, some of them won't be going back!" joked Markowitz, President of the Brooklyn Borough.

"There is a real demand for special event venues located within architectural monuments both in Manhattan and in Brooklyn," said Jennifer Blumin, President of the Skylight Group. "The space's historical ties to the community make Skylight One Hanson the ideal setting to bring New York's event industry together with the best of Brooklyn's local vendors."

2 Upcoming American Fertility Association 'Manicures & Martinis' Series Events

The American Fertility Association's Infertility Prevention Program

7.3 million!

That's how many American women have difficulty conceiving, but many of those cases could have been prevented with some simple lifestyle choices and changes. Education is the key and what better way to learn than over complimentary manicures and martinis?

"Dealing with infertility robs women of control over their own lives. Education about our bodies and about things we can do now to preserve our fertility potential gives that control back. The AFA's Manicures & Martinis Infertility Prevention Program has proven to be an empowering and liberating experience for women, whether they choose motherhood or not," says Corey Whelan, The AFA's Program Director and creator of the growingly popular and impactful Manicures & Martinis series.

The American Fertility Association's Manicures & Martinis Infertility Prevention Program is a national series of events dedicated to young women who are not quite ready to conceive, but might one day want to have a child. Fertility experts will lead conversations about how to prevent infertility whenever possible, the reality of the "biological clock," the harmful effects of STD's and environmental toxins, and the differences between gynecologists and reproductive endocrinologists. Attendees will enjoy complimentary manicures and martinis, or a "Fertiltini" - an all-organic, alcohol-free cocktail.

The AFA's Executive Director, Ken Mosesian, says, "Through post-event surveys, young women are telling us how much they have learned about the basics of reproduction, especially about their biological clocks, about the importance of preventing STD's, and about birth control. One participant said, 'Finally, some answers.'"

The list of cities in which Manicures & Martinis will be held continues to grow, with events most recently scheduled in San Francisco and Laguna Niguel.

Manicures & Martinis San Francisco

Manicures & Martinis Laguna Niguel

Date: Tuesday, June 16th
Time: 6:00-7:30
Location: Accent on Nails, 28121 Crown Valley Pkwy, Suite B, Laguna Niguel
Registration Contact: Corey@corey@theafa.org or 718.853.1411
Presenter: Brian Acacio, MD, of Acacio Fertility Center

The national series has been greeted with overwhelming success in New York City and other large metropolitan areas. We invite young women in their early 20's and 30's to attend, and learn all they can about how to safeguard themselves from becoming part of that grim statistic of 7.3 million.
